Creating an Inclusive Community Playground
Project Overview
Location: Ombersley Village
Active Garden was approached by Ombersley Village to review and improve their existing playground, with the aim of creating a more inclusive and exciting play space for local children while making the best use of the available budget.
Rather than replacing everything at once, the project was carefully planned in stages, allowing new equipment to be installed as fundraising and finances became available. This phased approach enabled the village to gradually transform the playground over a two-year period into a modern community facility enjoyed by children of all ages.
The Challenge
The existing playground already contained several items that were still in good condition, so the objective was to enhance the play area by retaining suitable equipment while introducing new features that would provide greater variety and improve accessibility.
Following an initial site survey, we produced a concept layout for discussion with the village committee before finalising the design and installation programme.
Our Solution
The refurbishment was completed over several phases, allowing the playground to grow as funding became available.
Throughout the project we supplied and installed a wide range of new commercial playground equipment, including:
- A large timber climbing frame, Hyland Q4
- Adventure trail equipment
- A communal nest swing
- Bespoke Climb-on tractor play feature
- Replacement springer
- Inclusive roundabout
- New wetpour and rubber bark safety surfacing around selected play equipment
Each stage was carefully planned to integrate seamlessly with the existing playground while providing new opportunities for climbing, balancing, imaginative play and inclusive recreation.
A Community Project
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was working alongside the village over an extended period.
By completing the installation in phases, the community was able to continue fundraising while gradually seeing their vision become reality. The result is a playground that offers a wide variety of play experiences for children of different ages and abilities while making the best possible use of available funding.
Returning to Support the Playground
Our relationship with Ombersley Village didn’t end once the installation was complete.
At the end of 2023, we were delighted to be invited back to carry out further improvements, including refreshing parts of the playground and installing additional rubber bark safety surfacing in key areas.
Returning to previous projects is something we are particularly proud of, as it reflects the long-term relationships we build with our customers and communities.
